How do you define, create and develop magical realism in your fiction?

Alba in Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits, Shori in Octavia Butler’s Fledgling and Lulu in Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich are all characters whose arcs and magical gifts determine the structure of their stories and express the underlying themes of storytelling, community and love, respectively. In this seminar we will discuss how to create a character with magical gifts, and an arc that both dictates structure and demonstrates theme. We will also examine ways to find a voice that makes the magical elements of your story feel real and the realistic elements feel magical.
