This is a challenging time to be alive and that's even more reason to see and celebrate the world's great beauty, to find magic in the everyday and to love and care for each other tirelessly. See below for class updates and giveaways.
Here's what one student had to say about their recent experience in my online class:"I cannot thank you enough for offering the opportunity of such an inspiring & wonderful workshop series!...My goals were to work with many of my challenges (self-consciousness, vulnerability, fears around sharing fiction, difficulty with metaphors or poetic language, and patience, among others...), to continue developing my skills and strengths, to be held accountable for writing all the damn time & resisting procrastination, & to learn more about the story I'm trying to tell. I feel that I have achieved all these goals and then some, and I have you to thank for offering such valuable feedback and encouragement, and for knowing just the right questions to ask to get me focusing on particular details, to dig deeper into the story, and to work toward clarification for potential readers as well as character development - and so much more!...I feel like I've done a lot of important work here, and there are so many insights I wouldn't have had if it weren't for this class - about myself and about my writing. Your wisdom and your magic have really opened up my writing process, my ideas for this particular story, and I feel like I'm capable of writing something much stronger than I was when I began this novel. Thank you for being so generous with your words and your time!" -- Maranda Elizabeth
Acclaimed Los Angeles mystery writer, Denise Hamilton, and I will be holding a one day writing workshop on Saturday, January 9th from 1-4 in Culver City. If you haven’t worked with Denise before, this is your chance! She’s a phenomenal and inspiring instructor and plot whisperer. You'll be able to submit 10 pages for critique. There's limited space so contact me now if you are interested. The cost is $200.
My popular online workshop, “How to structure your novel in 12 easy steps” will start January 11 for 10 weeks. The cost is $500 and we will cover character development, plot, setting and style in a comprehensive class that can help you through the first or final draft of your novel.I will also be teaching an in person class, Sundays starting January 17th for 10 weeks. The cost is also $500 and we will be reading ten of your pages a week and critiquing them as a group. There seems to be a wonderful synchronicity around who signs up for each session. I am always so happy to see the lifelong friendships that emerge from these classes. Here's a blog post I did about the remarkable women in my last in person class.
As always, I am also available for private manuscript critique and consultation.
